Not quite First Class yet
I love jokes about Singapore. It is familar to how you feel when people make jokes out of your boss. You enjoy them. A lot. But I am not going to discount the fact that within 40 years, it has gotten the title of the best airport, best cities in the world to reside, start business, political stability etc etc. If you start to count the achievements, Singapore will right up there with LaLaLand. For countless time, this island rejected the status of a 1st World. Yes, taxes, duties, etc remain as the biggest reasons to maintain 1.5 class status. But quite frankly, we are likened to a big factory. Where 4million people each day sit at the desk and mass produce what they are trained to do so. Brains come separately. I don't know how 1st class that make us out to be.
We lack something. Hard to pinpoint what. Even you would perhaps come up with 10 reasons in 10 seconds.
We lack class. There's the filthy rich, then there's us. People who live in pricey public housing, take public transport, dig their noses on the trains, demarcate seatings in the canteens with a pack of tissue, confuse the world with our lahs and lehs, give broken plates and bowls to charities. How weird that people call in to President's star charity to donate $500 bucks and refuse to give up their seats for pregnant ladies in the trains. But of course they get tax rebate for donations and none for giving up seats. Let me tell you, this is precisely the reason why we have low birth count. NO SEATS, NO BABIES.
The BoyFriend: Senior Minister is teaching other countries how to be 1st class.
Me: You know why Singapore is never going to be 1st world.
BF: Why?
Me: People don't give up seats to pregnant women.
BF: Babe, all other countries don't really give up seats to pregnant women either.
Me: Other don't have a problem with low birth count.
Humans have no class. We should be piggies.

Still I think I would rather migrate there than any place else in Asia. Of course I won't help with the birth rate either. Finished making babies. They cost too much time, money, and heart.
As long as you give up your seats to pregnant ladies, you are welcome.
I am from the south. My mother would jump out of the grave if I did not let a WIP mommy sit.
